smart valve - first flush diverter
- Smart-Valve - the first flush rainwater diversion for urban and rural systems
- Twist the cover in a counter-clockwise direction to adjust how it alters the hole openings.

The Smart-Vale is a first flush diversion device. The device when fitted in an inspection tee junction coupled with a rainhead unit optimises the operation, efficiency and performance of the first flush diversion apparatus.
This system is more effective in the managemenrt of roof and gutter systems for dispelling organic and leaf matter, mosquito control and first flush of the contamination that can occur then channelling this waste to the drainage.
The Smart-Valve combined with the rainhead is the best design available and it is automatic - naturally !
- How Much Water to Divert?
How much water you divert is primarily controlled by the cover setting on the valve ball. The amount of diversion you need is typically a function of the environmental situation in your area and your roof condition.
- For example, a highly-sloped, minimally contaminated roof surface in a non-polluted rural area may need a low diversion level, say 0.5 litre per M2 of roof area. Or a heavily contaminated roof in an urban setting could require a diversion level up to 2 litres per M2 of roof area, or more.
Since Smart-Valve is adjustable (see Setting Diversion Level, below) a diversion level of up to 2 litre per M2 can be reached for most roof sizes. Studies indicate that typical roof surfaces are cleaned acceptably after 5-10 minutes of medium-to-heavy rain, the more intense the rain the faster your roof is cleaned. A drizzling rain will not clean your roof very effectively; Smart-Valve is designed not to close if it is merely drizzling for this very reason (see Test Summary).
As a rule, the more water diverted the better the quality of water in the storage tank. It is best to consult with your local governing authorities to determine the optimum amount of diversion you require depending on the environmental situation in your area and your roof condition.
- Setting Diversion Level - Applies to DN110 Smart-Valve

The Valve Ball has a movable cover over its screened fill holes.
The cover allows you to adjust the fill-rate of the valve ball thus determining how fast the valve will close. How fast the valve closes controls the amount of rainwater that is diverted.
Assuming the roof sizes referenced below, Smart-Valve is calibrated to divert approximately 0.81 Litre/M2 at a flow rate of 19 Litres/min or higher (see Test Summary).
- Caution: Cover should never hide the "Do not exceed" line (shown at right) unless the valve is intended not to close.
- Cover Settings:
- - Fully Open: Diverts approx. 37 Litres (10 gal.)
Ref: 500 sqft. or 47 M2 roof size.
- 2/3 Open: Diverts approx. 85 litres (20 gal.)
Ref: 1000 sqft. or 93 M2 roof size.
- 1/2 Open: Diverts approx. 150 litres (40 gal.)
Ref: 2000 sqft. or 186 M2 roof size.
- 1/3 Open: Diverts approx. 225 litres (60 gal.)
Ref: 3000 sqft. or 280 M2 roof size.
- Fully Closed: Holes are covered - All water is diverted
(useful for a roof that's recently been crop-dusted, a full tank or to avoid frozen pipes in the winter time, etc.)
